I constantly hear from the right that we can't raise taxes on "job-creators" during this economic climate. My response is always "Why?" How many jobs have been created with tax rates where they are currently? None, because tax breaks don't create jobs demand does! Will putting thousands of dollars in the pockets of people already sitting on millions create demand? Will lowering the rate on corporations that already don't pay anything in taxes and are sitting on mountains of cash create demand? No and no. For thirty years the business model in this country has been to slash cost, make everything cheaper, and drive the stock price. The outcome of this model has been stagnant incomes for everyone except those in the top 2%. You cannot expect to grow a consumer based economy while systematically destroying the consumer base. If we continue with irresponsible tax policy and outsourcing the shrinkage in the US GDP will only have begun and we will have an economy that looks like that of Haiti or Liberia before we know it. My two cents, start by scrapping the tax code and all corporate subsidies, start over with clean brackets that address what we spend and not the "wish list" of every lobbyist, CEO, and special interest. Next, spend on infrastructure. Get people working, put some money in their pockets, and create demand. It won't be long before our economy is chugging along.
